Gentle Relief: Homeopathic Answers For Hemorrhoids

Melissa Crenshaw, RsHom, LCHE, IBCLC Season 6 Episode 14

Send a text to Melissa and she’ll answer it on the next episode.

Hemorrhoids aren’t glamorous, but the path to relief doesn’t have to be confusing or painful. We unpack what’s actually going on—internal, external, prolapsed, and thrombosed types—and translate symptoms into a simple, calm plan you can use at home. You’ll learn how to read the signs your body gives you: bleeding that points to venous weakness, stabbing “golf ball” pain without much blood, relentless itching made worse by heat and long sitting, and constipation from stress or diet that keeps flares going.

We walk through a practical remedy map so you can act with confidence. Hamamelis for dark, venous bleeding and bruised soreness; Arnica for trauma and straining, especially postpartum; Aesculus hippocastanum for sharp, stabbing pain with heaviness and dryness; Sulphur for burning itch that craves cool; Nux vomica for the tense, constipated, irritable pattern; Collinsonia for pregnancy and postpartum pressure with dry stool; and Aloe for protruding hemorrhoids with a “loose” sensation and urgent morning stools. We also explain how and when to use the Banerji-style protocol pairing Hamamelis 200C with Arnica 3C, and what to adjust as symptoms improve.

Supportive habits matter just as much. Hydration with trace minerals, magnesium to ease stool passage, warm Epsom sitz baths, witch hazel compresses, fiber-rich foods, and less time sitting all reduce strain and help tissues heal. We share clear guidance on red flags—heavy or persistent bleeding, severe pain, fever, or uncertainty about the source of bleeding—and why getting checked can be an empowering step, not a surrender of autonomy. Most hemorrhoids respond well to targeted remedies plus steady daily care, and with the right match you can often feel relief within a day or two.

SPEAKER_01:

Welcome back to Homeopathy at home with Melissa. Hey Melissa.

SPEAKER_00:

Hey, Brie. I um am happy to be here with you tonight. And we're gonna talk about something uncomfortable, not for us, but for people dealing with it. But hopefully we can be helpful, right?

SPEAKER_01:

Always. That's always our hope. Um we're always happy to be here. And it is always always uncomfortable for people or they feel uncomfortable talking about things like hemorrhoids. What causes them, or what we're gonna talk about tonight, is what causes them, how to know what type you're dealing with, which was a thing I didn't really even know were types until you're probably experiencing them. Um, and most people deal with them at some point. So we'll talk through natural supports and of course homeopathic remedies that can bring relief gently and effectively. And honestly, they can be surprisingly fast sometimes. That's not always the case in any. I would consider hemorrhoids are well, they can be acute and chronic, I guess.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, I think they're mostly chronic, but they pop up acutely. Yes. Okay, yeah. So we can treat it, not we can address the acute instance of the chronic condition.

SPEAKER_01:

Yes. Yeah, and maybe in a situation like childbirth, that those don't always stick around, or maybe that is, I think probably the only one. So if you have been struggling with um discomfort, itching, swelling, pain during bowel movements, bleeding, or you just want the information for yourself later or someone else in your life, um, we want to help you feel prepared and confident. So, what are hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoids are basically um swollen veins in the rectal area. And we say area because they can be internal. So inside the rectum, they can be external, where you see under the skin around the anus, thrombos, which means a painful clot inside an external hemorrhoid, or prolapsed internal hemorrhoids that bulge out. So symptoms might be they can be different. You might have all of these or only one or two if it's not very severe. Itching is pretty common with a lot of the types. Bleeding with bowel movements, pain or burning, swelling. You might feel um a pressure or fullness sensation, difficulty sitting, sharp or tearing pain. Um, things that can worsen hemorrhoids are things like pregnancy, postpartum, chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, especially if you also have all those other things, um, dehydration, heavy lifting, those things can all trigger or worsen them. And for real, you guys, it's very common. There's no shame. I think a lot of, I mean, we've this is actually very common. Something people talk about all the time in all ages. Um, I think the older we get, the more comfortable people get with them or expect them. But younger people, the or it's the fifth or first time experiencing them, it can be really uncomfortable, but it's very common. And homeopathy can help a lot.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. So homeopathy looks at the type of hemorrhoid, like you already mentioned, the pain sensation, what makes it better or worse. So those are your modalities, whether there's bleeding or not, the emotional response to it, and what else is going on. So is it is this postpartum? Is it constipation? Is there trauma? And remedies can help shrink swelling, reduce pain, stop the bleeding, calm the itching, heal the tissues, and prevent recurrence. And you know that I love energy protocols when they're appropriate, and we're gonna talk about that too. So let's I want to walk you through the most important remedies and how to use those. So, number one is hemomellus. Hemamelus um is my go-to when hemorrhoids involve bleeding, soreness, and a bruised heavy feeling. So think about the hemorrhoids um with bleeding during or after a stool, a feeling of fullness or congestion, very sore, tender hemorrhoids, veins that feel weak, pain improves with cool applications, bleeding looks dark or venous, the tissues feel bruised. Hemamellus is number one for bleeding hemorrhoids, and so this is also half of the Banergy protocol. And you can use a 30 or a 200 daily or and or as needed when the hemorrhoids are actively bleeding and painful. You can use it less often as your symptoms improve, and then for chronic weakness of veins, you can use a 30C daily for several weeks, and that can just support uh veins. So arnica is another one that's really great for hemorrhoids. This is for trauma, soreness, and swelling, especially postpartum or after straining. So you're gonna think about Arnica when there's soreness as if beaten, swelling after childbirth, hemorrhoids from lifting or straining, fear being touched, and painful sitting. And so this is also the second part of the Banergy protocol. So the Banergy Protocol for hemorrhoids is hemamellas 200C mixed with means taken at the same time as Arnica 3C twice per day. If you're not using the Banergy protocol and you just want to use Arnica, you you can choose 3, 6, 12, 30, 200, anywhere in there. It's perfectly fine. And again, start low and slow when you don't know. If someone has hemorrhoids with bleeding and soreness, this protocol is gold, and I use it often. Another great remedy is Aeschulus. Achillus, this is the one for the classic sharp stabbing. I'm sitting on a golf ball feeling. And the picture is severe pain without much bleeding. The rectum feels heavy, uh dry, rough, or burning. There might be a feeling of fullness and pressure, the pain radiates to the back. Stool feels like knives, worse standing or walking, and better for lying down. If the main thing is pain and dryness, then asculus is excellent. You could do six, 30, or 200 once or twice a day, or even more often if it's really bad. Another great remedy is Nux vomica, and this is for the hemorrhoids linked to constipation, straining, stress, and irritability. So this is where the mental emotionals come in, also that constipation. So think about nux vomica when there's a constant urge to pass stool, but only a little bit comes out. Straining makes everything worse. Hemorrhoids burn and itch, worse from spicy foods, coffee, and alcohol. The person is irritable, chilly, and tense. They have this sit-down, don't talk to me energy. They are irritable. And this can feel like the rectum is never empty. So NUX is the per is perfect for the type A stressed out, tight, constipated picture. So you could use 30 or 200 every few hours as needed. Sulfur is another great one for itchy, burning, irritated hemorrhoids. You'll think of sulfur when there's severe itching, burning like fire, hemorrhoids protrude, worse from heat, worse for sitting for long periods, worse at night, and the person wants a cool wash or wants to air it out. If the itching is the main issue, sulfur is top notch. And then we've got colonsonia. Colinsonia, colonsonia. This is especially for pregnancy hemorrhoids. So think about this remedy when there's constipation with hemorrhoids, persistent urge, painful rectal pressure, hemorrhoids worsened by pregnancy, dry, difficult stool. This is a great one for postpartum as well. Aloe. Aloe is for the hemorrhoids that feel like they're going to fall out. So think about aloe when there's protruding hemorrhoids, loose rectum sensation, jelly-like mucus, urgent stools in the morning, oozing feeling, worse for hot weather. When someone says it feels like everything is just going to pop out, think aloe. So what about thrombose hemorrhoids, like you already mentioned before? These are the painful, blue-tinged, swollen lumps. That that's what thrombos looks like. So the best remedies for thrombose hemorrhoids are hemamillus and arnica, lacassis when they're bluish purple, aschulus for intense sharp pain, aloe for protruding hemorrhoids. Most people feel relief within a day or two. And um also, side note in case you don't know if you're new to the show, there is a transcript so that you can see the spellings of these remedies. So, Brie, what else can people do besides homeopathy?

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, so some other supportive things that may help are just some lifestyle things that can make that move even faster, depending on maybe what caused them to. So maybe think through a few. If you're like some people when you're in pain, you might want to try every single one on the list, but that might also be really overwhelming. So pick a few that you have. Um, hydration, of course, if the stool is dry or hard, everything hurts more. So going can aggravate that. So stay really well hydrated. Make sure you're using good water or adding trace minerals to your water or electrolytes. Um, magnesium calms the bowels and reduces straining. Melissa really loves re-mag. Um, it's liquid magnesium if you're able to get that and you dilute that if you happen to have it or you can order some. It's very bioavailable. It's a good one to try. Um and sometimes the type, I mean, the type of magnesium does matter. So, really, we just recorded. Did we do a podcast on magnesium, or was that a part of a different thing?

SPEAKER_00:

That was part of the um anxiety course. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay. So never mind. I'm sorry, but maybe we should do a magnesium little thing so you guys can hear about re mag and all the good things in there. Um, Sitz baths may bring some relief with Epsom salt. So warm water with Epsom salt, witch hazel compresses. Those can be really nice. Um, especially, you know, think postpartum. So you don't have to be postpartum, but a lot of times, postpartum, there are like pre-made pads already with witch hazel on them. So you can go look in that area, and those you can use for any kind of hemorrhoids. Um, don't sit too long. That made a huge difference for me, postpartum. Literally, just laying down allowed them to heal much faster because the lack of pressure. Um, eat high fiber foods, fruits, vegetables, chia seeds, whole grains, and don't hold your stool. If you need to go, go. Because that pressure, I mean, just any pressure, that can also aid in constipation. So it would not do that. Um, as always, look, get professional medical care and listen to your body. See a provider. If the bleeding is heavy or persistent, if you're not sure they're hemorrhoids and you're having bleeding in your stool, you should get that checked out anyway, even if it's just to confirm you to you that it's a hemorrhoid, and then you can use that information. If the pain is very severe and not improving, if you develop a fever, suspect infection, or if they're just recurring and not getting better, um, go get help, get more information, even if you can go from there if you want to do the treatments they offer. Most hemorrhoids do resolve really well with homeopathy and some of these other things, but trust your intuition, get help if you need it.

SPEAKER_00:

Absolutely. And I want to just share that I know somebody who thought they had hemorrhoids, and um, it turned out to be a really, really bad situation. It wasn't hemorrhoids at all. So when you are not sure, um, and if there is a lot of bleeding and or anything else, or any of these things that that Bree just talked about, please just go get checked. You know, let's don't be, let's don't be extreme and say, I'm never going to the doctor.

unknown:

Right.

SPEAKER_01:

And I think, you know, on the same way, a lot of Western medicine people can use fear as a tactic. So can we in the crunchy world sometimes? And so just don't be, you don't have to be afraid to go get information. You can just use the information and go from there. You don't have to do anything, but information is never bad. Yeah, and if you go in, you know, you have autonomy, you can make decisions, but yeah, I love that you shared that because I mean, I think we can try to make assumptions a lot of times. And if you're concerned, just go get information.

SPEAKER_00:
