Homeopathy For Children’s Anxiety: Signs, Causes, And Support

Anxiety doesn’t always look like worry. Sometimes it’s a tummy ache before school, a freeze before a recital, a clingy bedtime routine, or a perfectionist spiral when plans change. We dig into the real-life patterns behind childhood anxiety and share clear ways to support kids with gentle homeopathy, practical routines, and a calmer daily rhythm.

We start by mapping the hidden signs—sleep struggles, irritability, sensory overload, and constant reassurance-seeking—then connect the dots to root drivers like gut health, food intolerances, mineral imbalances, blood sugar swings, and screen overstimulation. From there, we walk through matching remedies to the whole child, not the label: Pulsatilla for tender clinginess, Arsenicum album for orderly perfectionism and fear of sickness, Gelsemium for performance freeze, Calcarea carbonica for caution and resistance to change, Phosphorus for empathic sensitivity, Argentum nitricum for anticipatory worry with GI upset, and Ignatia for grief and emotional conflict.

Alongside remedies, we offer simple supports that actually move the needle: magnesium glycinate, predictable routines, morning sunlight, screen limits, deep pressure inputs like weighted blankets and “heavy work,” and belly breathing that kids will use. We also outline when to seek deeper help—panic attacks, school avoidance, severe sleep disruption in older kids, rapid weight loss, suicidal thoughts—and how therapy, medical care, and targeted testing can work with homeopathy rather than against it. Most of all, we reframe anxiety as a signal, not a flaw, and share compassionate steps to help kids feel safe in their bodies and homes.

SPEAKER_01:

Welcome back to Homeopathy at Home with Melissa. Hey Melissa.

SPEAKER_00:

Hey Brie. Happy to talk with you again today on a new subject about children.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, this one's hopefully going to be really helpful. As always, um, we're gonna talk about something we see often, and I'm sure you guys do too: anxiety in children.

SPEAKER_00:

Specifically in children.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, anxiety in children and what that can look like. So you may have a more sensitive child who cries easily, who worries a lot, a perfectionist who starts spiraling when something goes wrong. It could be a kid with fear at night, maybe um one who has social anxiety, who gets really overwhelmed in social situations. We're gonna talk about all of those things. So I'll also tell you homeopathy is one of the most powerful tools we have for emotional support for kids. I mean, really anyone. This is a place where homeopathy shines. And you say this a lot, Melissa, that um it is so effective here. It's almost feels like a too good to be true in most cases, the way that it can work. And now it's not always immediate, but it does significantly help anyone that I have encountered who's added it in in some way. It's safe, gentle, can be very specific to your child. And so today we're gonna cover what anxiety can look like in different children. Maybe some root causes you might not expect, the top homeopathic remedies, of course, maybe some um emotional support strategies, and then where deeper constitutional work really matters. So we'll dive right into what it looks like in kids. Um, anxiety doesn't always show up as worry, and you it might not be that obvious. It often can look like um belly aches, headaches, trouble sleeping, fear of being alone. They might melt down over small things, and sometimes that can show up as irritability or sudden anger, which doesn't automatically make you think anxiety when you see those behaviors. Um, it may be very avoidant. They might want constant reassurance about things, lots of perfectionism. They might be clingy, um, very restless. You might see the nail biting, hair twirling, skin picking, just movement, um, difficult with trans or difficulty with transitions, maybe emotional oversensitivity. If they're always in a heightened state of anxiety, their tolerance level for their emotional changes will be small. And so they may seem to overreact um emotionally or to sensory input. So noise, lights, crowds. I also think we should probably say that these are neurotypical children present this way. If you have a child who's on the spectrum or has another, and I mean, even an ADHD kid, that can play into this as well. So they may also have some of these things, but just know it may be a result. And we'll get into some of that way, why they might be anxious or some root causes that you might not think of. Um, so some of the things that might cause anxiety in kids are a highly sensitive temperament. Some kids just feel very deeply. And this um may include sensory, highly sensory children as well. Gut issues can be huge. Serotonin lives in the gut, and that helps keep things calm. Um, we see this sometimes with kids with food allergies or intolerances. They feel truly anxiety that will present that way. And if in adults that can happen as well. Um, trauma and fear. And this may be things that we as adults dismiss because to us it's not that big of a deal, but to them, it was a very big deal. School stress can be a big one, whether it's social pressure from their peers or maybe a test coming up or transitions to a new school year or class to class, if there's different people in each class. It could be too much stimulation, screens, noise, activities, people, um, mineral imbalances, magnesium deficiency, which is huge for most people, um, and blood sugar drops. So if they're eating a lot of foods that are not keeping their blood sugar balance, that can cause a lot of these problems. And then, of course, um parenting stress. Kids feel what we feel, they see things, they recognize things. And so you may see if there's a lot going on of disruption in the home, that that can affect the children. But don't feel bad. The good news is homeopathy can really help address these things, even if you're not able to change the environment all the time, you can still bring regulation using remedies. Right.

SPEAKER_00:

And what we're looking for is um the child's personality, their behavior, their fears, and their patterns to choose remedies. So we're not just saying anxiety, these remedies. We're looking at this child as a person. So pulsatilla is a big one for the gentle, clingy, sweet child. So think about um the child that wants to be held all the time. They seek reassurance, cries easily, doesn't want to be left alone. They can be soft, changeable moods, um, sensitive to heat, and fear of abandonment. This is great for little boys and girls with tender hearts. Our Synicum album has the fear, worry, and perfectionism. So think about fear of sickness, germs, fear of throwing up, needs things orderly. They might be anxious at night, want a parent nearby, and they can be restless. Um, they can also tend towards belly aches. And this is perfect for the kids who ask, Mom, are you sure it's okay? They need that that reassurance. Gelsimium is for the performance anxiety. So think about the child who freezes before a test, a recital, or sports. Um, they might be shaky, weak, and trembling with their anxiety. They want to avoid the events. Um, they can be slow, feel heavy, droopy, and um their nerves just shut them down. So this is wonderful for the school age kids. Calc carb, calcaria carbonica is for the cautious, steady child. So think about calc carb when there's a fear of change, worrying about safety. Um, they this child can be slow to warm up, they really like routines, they kind of have big imaginations, they sweat at night or on the head or both. And these are the old soul kids, so they carry the weight of the world. They're usually really mature. And then phosphorus is for the open-hearted, extra sensitive child. So think about phosphorus when the child feels everything. They're afraid of storms, loud noises, darkness, they love people, they're easily overstimulated, they need connection, they have strong imaginations, and they can absorb emotions from others. So, this is a beautiful remedy for the empathetic children. And Argentum nitricum is uh also a really great one for anticipatory anxiety. So, think about Argentum Nitricum when anxiety is about upcoming events. The person, the child might talk fast, uh, have GI issues before events or things, mostly diarrhea. They can't fall asleep due to their racing thoughts, and they can have a fear of heights, bridges, and crowds. And then a last really good one is ignatia. This is for the grief, disappointment, and emotional conflict. So think about ignatia when there's the child is sighing, they might describe they feel a lump in their throat, they feel overwhelmed, have sudden outbursts, and um, they're holding in their emotions. So this is great when anxiety stems from emotional um hurts. So, what else can people do outside of homeopathy?

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, so some other supportive things you may be able to try is uh magnesium glycinate. That helps calm the nervous system. Um, you may see that show up in more of a calmness in general, it might affect their sleep first. I think even in adults, that can help. Obviously, a lot of things can probably help with adults as well. Um, consistent routines, that predictability, especially in kids with anxiety, helps them feel safe and secure. They know what to expect. Um, and just think if they're always in that heightened state already, what we can do to provide stability elsewhere can help bring them down. Um, getting out in the sun in the morning helps reset that cortisol rhythm. It's very, very helpful. Really great grounding. So if you can do that in bare feet, we talked about that a long time ago, but there is an episode on grounding. Um, very important for kids is screens off early in the day. And not much of them if you can do that, especially if they're going to school where they're using screens most of the day, but try as much as you can to not have them on those. It really can overstimulate any child, but especially if there is anxiety. There is a lot of research on the way that screens are used, games or videos or anything, and how that can affect the brain. So that is huge, especially today these days. Um, deep pressure. So think weighted blankets, a good hug. Um, sometimes even heavy work. I do sometimes do this for my sons, getting their body releasing some of that outwardly, but also um just being squeezed, being held. There are a lot of things on Amazon, even there's these, they're called body socks or something. It looks like a big pillowcase, but they can be in it and it's like kind of tight on their body. And my kids love them. And they literally just go in there or a swing that kind of tightens around them. One of those like net swings. We have one of those, and that helps when they're really overstimulated. Um, belly breathing. Not of adults don't do this anymore. We breathe with our shoulders. So kids do more naturally do this, but tell them to blow up the balloon in their belly when they breathe. You want them to be breathing deep into their belly. Sometimes you can count with them, that can be really helpful to bring them down and regulate. And then a space for safe emotional expression. When they feel heard and acknowledged, that anxiety softens and they feel safer. Um, it's always a good idea to consider deeper help if you think your child needs it. There are so many great resources, lots of types of therapy. If the anxiety is interfering with their daily life or you're as a family your daily life, they are they can't sleep alone or just can't sleep at all, depending on the age of the child. It's not always natural for a kid to be fine sleeping alone. If you have a three-year-old who doesn't want to sleep alone, that's pretty normal. If it's not extreme, if you have a 10 or 12-year-old who's not who's really afraid of sleeping alone, I would consider that. Um if they're wanting to avoid school or normal activities that they maybe did like or that are normal experiences, there are panic attacks, um, or if there are recurrent physical symptoms. So if you're seeing vomiting, headaches, chest tightness, lots of belly aches, even, go get information. Um that can also be part of working with us, working with Melissa's team, we can also help with some of those things. But there are a lot of resources you can reach out to alongside homeopathy.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. Yeah. So when you have those things that you just listed, Brie, um, when people find them, so podcast episodes like this can be helpful and you can start here. But when somebody's dealing with some severe anxiety, then just reach out and let let us help you. Go to MelissaCrenschell.com, schedule my call is the button, um, because we can help. When you need uh, you know, um a physician's care, you discern that, you decide that when you need that for your child. And you know, the the couple of things that I can think of where we could still help with homeopathy, but you may need uh you may also need to see a physician is you know, weight loss. Um like severe weight loss because of anxiety. And then of course, if there's ever any suicidal ideations, they need to get to a doctor, they need some professional help. And once they're safe, we can help you also with using homeopathy alongside whatever you're doing with your professional.

SPEAKER_01:

So I would also, I'm sorry to interrupt you. I could add if there has been a traumatic event, or if there is abuse, or if you have maybe a foster child or it's instances of adoption, or there's just, you know, abnormal situations, that does absolutely need outside support. Remedies can help, like you said, for sure. But that requires a different level, different types of support as well. And that will for sure can cause anxiety as a result of those things.

SPEAKER_00:

Right. And you know, sometimes anxiety can be caused by severe hormonal imbalances that you can't know unless you go and get blood tests or you know, however, you're gonna test. So, or stool tests or saliva tests, you know, however you wanna you wanna test for those things. We don't start there, but you know, when we're when things just aren't changing and and we don't see movement, then we might need to go a little bit deeper and get some testing. Yep. So anxiety in kids is not a character flaw. So please, you know, don't don't think that and let's not have our children believe that it's not bad behavior, it's actually just a signal that there's something deeper that needs to be addressed. And with homeopathy and um really caring and compassionate parenting, we can support the nervous system and we can get these kids better. Um, so again, if you want to learn how to use homeopathy at home, go to join.melissacrenshaw.com and take a look at the inner healing circle. That's where I teach parents like you how to use homeopathy at home. Um, if you just need individualized care, then go to melissacrenshaw.com and click schedule my call and I'll give you a call and we'll talk through how I can help you with your your specific child's case.
