Surgery doesn’t end when the sutures go in; that’s when the real work begins. We open up the full map of recovery, from the moment anesthesia fades to the first confident steps back into daily life, and share a practical, compassionate toolkit that supports the whole person. Our focus is simple: reduce pain and swelling, steady the nervous system, restart digestion, and help the skin, bones, and connective tissues rebuild with less stress and fewer setbacks.

We start with what the body actually experiences during a procedure—tissue trauma, nerve irritation, detox load, emotional vulnerability—and explain how specific remedies can meet each need. Arnica addresses bruising and shock. Hypericum calms sharp, shooting nerve pain after dental work, spinal procedures, or C-sections. Staphysagria supports clean incisions and the quiet anger or overwhelm that can linger. Calendula promotes healthy closure and reduces scarring when used appropriately. For anesthesia nausea, dizziness, and sensitivity, Phosphorus steadies the system, while Nux vomica helps when medications stall digestion and increase irritability.

Deeper layers get their due. Bellis perennis helps when soreness sits in the abdomen, pelvis, or breasts after deeper work. Ruta supports tendons and ligaments after orthopedic or dental procedures, and Symphytum backs bone healing after fractures, spinal surgery, or extractions. We also share a straightforward cheat sheet so you can match symptoms to remedies with confidence and space doses as relief sets in.

Recovery isn’t only about remedies. We walk through hydration with electrolytes, protein-forward meals, warm foods after abdominal procedures, steady magnesium, and gentle walking to reduce clot risk and wake up digestion. We talk candidly about emotional support and the moment to escalate care: fever, spreading redness, severe swelling, drainage, intense unrelenting pain, breathing trouble, or persistent constipation. If you want personalized guidance for an upcoming procedure—or need help now—join the Inner Healing Circle or book a consult so we can build your plan together. If this helped, subscribe, share with a friend facing surgery, and leave a review to help others find us.

Listener Mail: Baby Eczema

SPEAKER_00

Welcome back to Homeopathy at Home with Melissa. Hey Melissa.

SPEAKER_01

Hey Brie. We have fan mail.

SPEAKER_00

Fan mail. Yeah. Every once in a while we get some for you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I want to I'm going to read this one and let you answer the question, Brie. Okay. So this is from Linda. She says, My granddaughter is struggling with severe eczema on her face and head. How do we learn more about seeing you? My daughter and husband are at their wits' end. And when she went public with it, one friend recommended your podcast. We are so excited to learn more about homeopathy and which you can do for us. That's so sweet. I know. Why don't you tell her how she can?

Getting Help: Consults And Caution

SPEAKER_00

I would love to do that. And first of all, I'm so sorry. It's so hard having a baby with eczema. I mean, any age, but little guys are so hard. Um, so if you would like to do a chronic consult, which is what I suggest long term, you can go to melissacrunshow.com and there is an option to schedule a free 15-minute call. That is the best thing to do. Melissa will walk you through like what that process might look like, get you in touch with me, and give you our options. Um, I'll also say there are a couple podcasts that we've recorded. You can go listen to those. That might give you some good context, maybe a place to get started. But with remedies, I am always cautious to just throw remedies out there for people. And that's really just because of what I've seen in chronic cases with babies and toddlers. Um, some of those remedies, even Benergy protocols, are easy to find. And you, you know, I've had people start those or I've used them to start, but with certain cases that, you know, they respond differently. And the remedies are not dangerous, but that is an area where I think oversight and some help, some outside help is really beneficial because each baby is an individual. So when I meet with a family, I mean, I ask a lot of questions to try to make sure with a lot of with a lot of other symptoms, it's okay to maybe go through that. It gets worse before it gets better kind of healing process. I try really hard to not do that with baby eczema. And so that's one reason I have learned that some protocols aggravate pretty quickly, some of them don't. What to do if that happens? Um, and then just the layers that come after that are really important to address. Very often a protocol itself doesn't clear it up. And so you need more support. I do also um I have topical suggestions for you, several different ideas we talked through for if a flair comes up in this process, how to manage that, how to expect it, how to expect the remedies to work. And a lot, so much of that first consult is education on what healing looks like and not what we have learned to accept as healing in the Western world, which is actually just symptom suppression. That is the hardest, most important thing to get a hold of is healing, what that looks like. So you, and it's really for you to feel confident about what you're gonna say to other people because they all comment, they all want to give you ideas. So we talk through that. We talk about food elimination, should you or shouldn't you, and what else is necessary? And I really try to bring a level of calm and confident energy there so we can move forward without all the stress and anxiety and come in as just like a helper to you. And um anyway, that's my goal in those. So I might have gotten on a little tangent there. That's what I'd recommend. Um, so go ahead and do that. But you can listen to the podcast and get in touch with us if you're interested. I'd love to help you.

Why Surgery Stresses The Body

SPEAKER_01

Love it. Thank you for sharing that. And so I call Brie my eczema expert, and I give all eczema cases to Brie because she is absolutely fantastic at it. So, tonight, let's jump into this podcast episode. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Today we're talking about something that almost everyone goes through at some point in their life, and that's surgery. And so we're gonna talk about how homeopathy can make recovery so much smoother. So, whether it's a C-section, a dental surgery, orthopedic surgery, a biopsy, a mole removal, or something serious, your body goes through trauma. And homeopathy is one of the most beautiful ways to support that healing process. Today we're gonna talk about we're gonna talk through what the body needs during recovery, how homeopathy supports healing, the top remedies for pain, swelling, and trauma, how to support support incision healing, remedies for anesthesia after effects. And so let's dig in. So, Bri, I would like to start with asking you what happens to the body during surgery.

Core Remedies For Trauma And Pain

SPEAKER_00

All right, so during surgery, even I mean, even with the best surgeons or all of the pre-care and really if the procedure goes smoothly, there are still effects on your body, obviously. Um and some of those include, this is just basic level. So if something goes off the rails, maybe something else, but tissue trauma. Um, you definitely may have some nerve irritation. I mean, just due to the nature of a surgery, bruising and swelling. It can be quite a shock to the nervous system, which might not be a visible symptom, but it's very important to address. It puts some stress on your detox organs, partly the medication, but all the other stuff that your body's going through at the same time. Um, can create some emotional vulnerability, digestive sluggishness, thank you, anesthesia. And post-surgical healing, really in the world we live in, right, when we use remedies, it is a whole person process. It's not always treated that way in allopathic care, but it is. It's physical, emotional, metabolic, and homeopathy supports all of those things that you might experience.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So let's talk through some of the top homeopathic remedies for surgery recovery. And the number one is Arnica Montana. Most people know this one. If you only use one remedy after surgery, make it Arnica.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So this would be this is great for bruising, swelling, soreness, feeling beaten, restlessness from discomfort, and this can help prevent hematomas. Arnica helps the tissues recover from the physical shock of the procedure. And so I really like 30 or 200 every few hours, only as needed for the first few days, and then reduce it. So don't keep doing that long term. Number two is hypericum. Um, this is a nerve for the nerve pain. So for any surgery involving nerves, hypericum is vital. This is great for shooting sharp electric pains, pain radiating along the nerves, wounds involving fingers, spine, or face, dental surgery, c-sections, which are you know a nerve-rich area, and this works beautifully for post-op nerve irritation. Staphosagria is great for the clean cut, C-section, laparoscopy, and emotional trauma. So this remedy is gold. Think about the clean surgical incision, like those things that I just listed. Um, biopsy cuts, catheter pain, urethral pain, feeling violated or angry, suppressed emotions. Staphosagria helps both the physical and the emotional trauma. Calindula is great for the skin and incision healing. And calendula is your wound healer. So it speeds up closures, prevents infection, and minimizes scarring. This is great for incisions, stitches, scars, burns, skin irritations, and you can use this internally, um, homeopathically, or um applied as a diluted ointment around, not directly on the incision if it's approved by your provider. Were you gonna say something about calendula?

SPEAKER_00

Um, I was gonna, and then it's funny that you thought that because then I wasn't gonna. But yeah, I well, um I was typically they don't want you to put anything on it if it if the incision is not healed all the way. Once it's healed all the way, you can usually use anything topically, well, not anything, but you know, and I love I found a calendula in oil. So it's just it's a tincture, but with no alcohol, no other, nothing cutting it, it's just if um infused into oil, which you could do at home if you have calendula flowers. And um, and then I love, and if you are an eczema person, you've heard me say this the vitamin E oil. I love vitamin E oil. That stuff is like magical if it's real vitamin E oil.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I loved using that on. I got a big old scar here. And I massage vitamin E into that guy. I mean, it didn't really do much. You can see it's really huge, but yeah. Okay, anyways, back to remedies.

Incisions, Skin Care, And Oils

SPEAKER_01

Well, thank you for sharing that. That's really good. Because I think a lot of people don't think of calendula oil. We always think of creams and gels and you know, like a bit of brand. But yeah, calendula oil. So number five is phosphorus for the anesthesia, nausea, and fear. This is perfect after general anesthesia. Great for nausea after surgery, vomiting, dizziness, weakness, emotional sensitivity, fear before procedures, also great after dental numbing. Number six is nox vomica for the digestive sluggishness. This is great um when because the surgery often causes constipation, gas bloating, irritability, and then side effects from the medications. If bowel function stalls, nox vomica gets things moving again. Number seven is bellus perennis for the deep tissue trauma. And this remedy is like Arnica's big sister, great for a deep tissue injury, abdominal trauma, pelvic surgery, C-sections, breast surgeries. If Arnica helps but doesn't fully fix the deep ache, bellus perennis often finishes the job. So so that basically um alluded to the big sister always finishes the job.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't even put it that way, but that is hilarious. You're right. Yep.

SPEAKER_01

I can say that because I'm a big sister. You're the big sister, Lindsay.

SPEAKER_00

You're listening.

SPEAKER_01

My sister's amazing.

SPEAKER_00

She is amazing. I love her.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and now I have to say, I mean, I have to. Many people have heard me say I'm an only child and only grandchild. And then at some point later, they hear that I say sister Lindsay, and they're like, wait a minute. Like, is she crazy? Is she a liar? What's happening? Well, so let me explain. Lindsay is my sister. We have the same dad, we have different moms, and we didn't grow up in the house together. So I've so because we didn't grow up in the house together, I have only child syndrome. Okay, so I can still say that I'm an only child.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Your only child and a big sister.

Anesthesia And Digestion Support

SPEAKER_01

Right? I'm an only child and have an amazing sister. Okay, back to remedies. Number eight, RUTA, R U T A. Great for connective tissue and tendon. So if surgery involved ligaments, tendons, or joints, then you'll think of RUTA. This is great for the orthopedic surgery, the ACL, MCL repair, tendon repair, strained ligaments. RUTA gives structural healing support. And number nine, symphitum for the bone healing. This is um great for the post-surgical bone work. Symphitum helps with bone fusion, bone incisions, fractures, um, fracture surgery, dental extractions, especially useful after wisdom too surgery. And um, as a side note, we always make sure that the bone is set in place where it's supposed to be. It's in line before you use symphitom because it can fuse your bones so quickly. If it's if your bone isn't where it's supposed to be, it might, you know, you'll end up. So we don't want to do that.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I wanted to say about Ruta real quick. Okay. I I don't know if this is a stretch to say, but it's such a good one for dental work, like um braces when they get moved around that I would I would think in the with dental surgery. If you are getting, or if you have a child whose tooth is get, I don't know, if you're getting a tooth fixed, an implant, something like that, um, for the connective tissues there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like restabilizing the tooth. My son responded so well when with braces. And you wouldn't, there's also a lot of stuff in the roof of your mouth that goes on with dental surgery. So maybe add that in for any of those types of things.

Bones, Tendons, And Dental Work

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Yeah, I agree. So when my son would get his braces tightened and it was so painful, Rudo was the one. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Absolutely. So let me give you a quick um some matching symptoms and your little cheat sheet. So I do encourage you to pause the podcast, go back and write down your keynotes that I've just given you, and then also write down these um this little cheat sheet. So bruising and soreness equals arnica, sharp nerve pains equals hypericum, clean surgical wounds equals staphosagria, deep pelvic abdominal surgery equals bellus perennus, incisions, stitches, and scars equals calindula, nausea after anesthesia equals phosphorus, digestive issues after medications equals nox phomica, bone involvement equals symphitum, tendon and ligament involvement equals ruta, and you can use multiple remedies and rotation if needed. So, Bree, I would love for you to share with our listeners some supportive strategies for post-surgical healing.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. So, um, one of your main ones is hydration, good water, maybe some electrolytes in there or trace minerals. Um, you want to be eating high protein foods. You should be eating this way anyway, but hopefully you're eating this way, especially after surgery for tissue healing. You really need good protein. Um, also, warm foods, if it's after a C-section, warm foods get your body healing well. There, I I read all about that when I was postpartum, but especially postpartum, but in general. So high protein and magnesium. You're gonna hear me say that one probably every single time. But this is great for relaxing your muscles. It also helps with um medication side effects. So just have magnesium in your rotation regularly. Um, gentle walking, if that's approved by what I mean, depending on your surgery, but that can prevent blood clots and get your digestion moving again, um, which again avoids constipation. So you don't want to be constipated. That I mean, your elimination systems need to be working well to heal well. And then make sure you have emotional support, whether that's uh, I mean, a remedy and a person or a place to do that is definitely helpful. Um, of course, post-surgery, if you need to seek more help, if you're having more issues like fever or um redness spreading from that incision, severe swelling, drainage from your incision, intense pain, trouble breathing, um, you're very severely constipated. Homeopathy can help all of those things. But if you're not confident or it's not getting better, obviously use your judgment, get help, um, use wisdom there.

Your Post-Op Support Plan

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. So surgery doesn't have to be scary or miserable. And when you support your body with homeopathy, nutrition, hydration, you can help recovery unfold in a smoother and more peaceful way. So if you want personalized support for an upcoming surgery, or if you want more tools like these, you can join us in the inner healing circle at join.melissacrenshell.com, or you can book a consultation at melissacrenshell.com.
